What is the Montessori Method?
Montessori is a philosophy and method of education which emphasizes on the potential
About Us
Sunflower Montessori kindergarten

At Sunflower Montessori we strive for the fullest possible development of each child according to the philosophy developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Using the specially prepared environment and scientifically designed material, we nurture the physical, intellectual, social and emotional growth of each child. Our purpose is to help each child develop a foundation of habits, attitudes, skills, appreciations and ideas necessary for a lifetime of creative learning.

The program is offered in an orderly, child-sized environment. Children have the freedom to choose activities which satisfy their curiosity and their sense of wonder for the world, which fosters independence. Children work at their own pace and rhythm to fulfill their needs. The materials engage and stimulate independent exploration and learning. The children become aware that it is their initiative which leads to accomplishment. The child is given instruction of the Montessori-designed materials on a one-to-one basis or in very small groups based on the child's readiness and developmental needs. The materials are attractive, manipulative and self-correcting. The child is helped to develop habits of concentration and perseverance that will permanently establish him as a confident learner.

Learning is fun

We believe that if learning is designed to be fun for the child then the greater the benefit will be.

There are many activities and games that are both educational and fun, but as they are enjoyable for the children, they see them as exciting and new! At Sunflowers, children learn through natural development and are not forced to do anything, we simply direct them to something which will both stimulate and encourage them.

We encourage the children to socialise with their peers. At the start of each session at Sunflower we have ‘circle time’ when each child is encouraged to interact. This is also when we discuss the sound of the week. Other small group activities we have at Sunflowers include cooking, craft work, music and movement and French.

We keep comprehensive records on each individual child and provide you with a daily written dairy, to which you can add, at the end of each session. Your child’s Keyworker will also write an individual learning plan for your child each term.

Aims

One of our primary goals at Sunflower Montessori is to develop each child to his or her fullest potential and enable each child to achieve individual success. We seek children who will thrive in a stimulating, ordered environment that arouses their curiosity, nurtures their creativity and fosters their independence. Along with love and a stable environment, this is one of the child's greatest needs
In order to fulfill the philosophy of Maria Montessori and EYFS targets, Sunflower Montessori has established the following goals:

  • To develop a positive attitude toward learning
  • To develop self-confidence as an independent learner
  • To develop sensory motor skills
  • To build habits of concentration
  • To foster inner security and sense of order
  • To enhance social development
  • To develop a child's creative intelligence and imagination
  • To encourage grace and courtesy as part of daily life
  • To work closely with parents to gain knowledge of each individual child and     their experiences. We acknowledge that parents are the primary educators     and we aim to work together to provide the best possible curriculum for every     child.
  • To use the Montessori method to encourage active learning and to ensure     children learn at their own pace.
  • To follow the Early Learning Goals for the Foundation Stage to ensure the     children are learning through a variety of planned and purposeful activities.
  • To encourage children to learn for themselves and to be able to make     choices and decisions.
  • Accreditation

Sunflowers Montessori Kindergarten are approved by the Montessori Centre International to accommodate students to carry out their teaching practice. We are currently working towards accreditation. The Nursery School is inspected by OFSTED every three years and is registered to accept the DFES grant for eligible 3 and 4 year olds.
